PA will cut you a break if you suffer a casualty loss. Effective 9/11/16, taxpayers may now defer tax on insurance proceeds that exceed the tax basis of assets lost by fire or natural disaster.  Previously, PA taxed the gain even if the proceeds were used to rebuild.
